The Genetics and Epigenetics of Cancer Group, led by Manuel Perucho have just published a paper in the prestigious journal Nucleic Acids Research in which they describe a new RNA suspected of playing a role in some colon cancers
The Genomes for Life Project (GCAT) in collaboration with the Blood and Tissue Bank (BST) has collected genetic, health and lifestyle information from 20,000 people in the Catalan area. This April the first phase, the collection of samples and data, has closed and the second follow-up phase has got underway, this will continue for at least 20 years. With all the data collected, the GCAT Project will be able to evaluate the role of genetic and epidemiological factors in the development of the main chronic diseases in Catalonia.
In a program run by the Spanish Foundation for Innovation and Future Health (FIPSE) the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has selected an IGTP project for its Mentoring Program in Biomedicine. The project is to develop a family of hydrogels to answer unmet needs in digestive endoscopies and avoid complications in endoscopic procedures
Scientists warn that a widespread lack of iodine threatens brain development in children. Iodine insufficiency is one of easiest public health problems to solve, even though it affects so many people worldwide. According to experts, the key to preventing iodine insufficiency is consumption of adequate amounts in a sustained and continued way. The " Krakow Declaration on Iodine" created by the EUthyroid Project calls on those responsible for European policy to support measures to eliminate iodine insufficiency.
The Innate Immunity Group, led by Maria Rosa Sarrias has published two papers on their work on how cancer cells subtly retrain the body's immune system and subvert its natural defences. In this case the group has worked on liver cancer, in conjunction with the Childhood Liver Cancer Group (C-Log), Marga Sala (Hepatology Unit, Department of Gastroenterology, Germans Trias Hospital) and doctors from a large number of hospitals, but they believe the mechanism may be important for the prognosis of many different cancers.
Researchers from the Heart Disease Research Group at the Germans Trias I Pujol Research Institute (IGTP) and researchers from the Spanish Biomedical Research Network for Cardiovascular Disease (CIBERCV) have analysed the degree of shortening of telomeres and its correlation with progression of cardiac insufficiency (CI) over a year. The seventh edition of the Charity Fun Run for Minority Paediatric Diseases was a resounding success this year, with twice as many runners as 2017. In all 700 participants completed the different routes and enjoyed a family fun day in Badalona.
Today and during all of this week reusable water bottles will be on sale at three supermarkets of the Sorli chain in Badalona. Funds from the sales will support research into kidney disease. The event is part of the celebration of World Kidney Day, which takes place on 8 March.
