IGTP has concluded a new cycle of visits to its laboratories as a part of La Marató "Visita la Recerca" program. More than fifty people had the opportunity to explore the biomedical research carried out at the institute through talks, workshops, and guided tours of the laboratories and facilities.
On the occasion of World Multiple Sclerosis Day, GCAT-IGTP, in collaboration with the Hospital del Mar Research Institute, has promoted a video exploring multiple sclerosis through the perspectives of clinical practice, biomedical research and personal experience. The video highlights current research into the link between multiple sclerosis and the Epstein-Barr virus, as well as the value of population cohorts such in advancing more preventive and personalised medicine.
The closing event celebrated on 17 November highlighted the work carried out and strengthened the commitment to maintain and expand the synergies created within the framework of the Plan. IGTP has contributed to several collaborative projects, focused on type 2 diabetes, breast cancer and medical databases.
Nearly two hundred baccalaureate and vocational training students have taken part in a new edition of the activity "Open House: get to know the Can Ruti Campus up close", once again consolidating the campus's commitment to scientific outreach and to fostering vocations among young people.

This approach makes it possible to identify risk profiles for long COVID that had not been detected until now. The research was conducted within the framework of the COVICAT study, coordinated in collaboration with ISGlobal.
A study led by GCAT-IGTP links the VEGFA protein to long COVID, especially in postmenopausal women, suggesting a vascular mechanism behind persistent symptoms. The findings highlight the need to consider sex and hormonal status in long COVID research and treatment.
Researchers from GCAT have taken part in a study on the effects of various environmental factors on the risk of developing asthma over the course of life. The study involved nearly 350,000 participants from European cohorts and used geolocation technologies and satellite imagery to estimate exposure to different environmental elements. The results show a clear link between urban conditions and an increased risk of asthma.
IGTP’s strategic project GCAT|Genomes for Life has published a study in the journal Scientific Reports proposing a method to correct selection biases in population-based cohorts. The study represents a significant step forward in improving the reliability of data derived from such studies for public health research and precision medicine.
New insights into the complexities of Long COVID have been brought to light, thanks to an international collaborative effort with the participation of researchers from GCAT|Genomes for life, a strategic project of IGTP. A study published today in Nature Genetics used the vast data from the COVID-19 Host Genetics Initiative to perform the first study examining the entire genetic code specifically focused on Long COVID.
According to a study of the COVICAT cohort, almost one in four people infected with SARS-CoV-2 suffered from long-COVID.
