Precision increases in a project led by Germans Trias using AI to detect early facial changes in patients with acromegaly

A project led by the Germans Trias i Pujol University Hospital and Research Institute has developed an AI-based facial recognition system, AcroFace, capable of detecting early signs of acromegaly with 93% accuracy. The researchers are now conducting a larger pilot study with 4,000 images from the general population to confirm these promising results and improve early diagnosis of this rare disease.

ICS 2024 Career Achievement Award and Best Research Poster at the 15th ICS Conference, focused on respiratory diseases

Advanced therapies and precision medicine, artificial intelligence applied to respiratory diseases, the importance of networking, or the challenges of social care and ageing in the field of research were some of the topics discussed during the 15th edition. The ICS Research Awards were also presented during the event, with the majority being awarded to female researchers this year.

The Research Institute of the Germans Trias i Pujol Hospital demonstrates how personalised medicine helps to control the effects of acromegaly earlier

IGTP leading the first study in the world to prove that personalised therapies are more effective than classic drugs indicated for the treatment of this rare hormonal disease. It is based on response biomarkers that, depending on what they indicate, allow the best possible treatment to be assigned earlier. In addition to very noticeable facial and skeletal deformities, acromegaly causes severe alterations in other parts of the body. Published in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism.

Presentation of the ACROFACE project at Germans Trias for early detection of people with acromegaly

The Endocrine, Thyroid and Obesity Research Group led by Dr Manel Puig Domingo and the Universitat Rovira i Virgili (URV) spin-off company UP2SMART have created an artificial intelligence that can detect early facial changes in photographs.  The software opens the door for an early detection system for acromegaly, a rare disease which produces deformities in facial and skeletal bone structure and has a range of other effects such as cardiac problems, diabetes and cancer. It is frequently diagnosed 10 years after onset, which leads to further complications.

The IGTP contributes to the European Society of Endocrinology statement on COVID-19 and endocrine diseases

Manel Puig, acting director of the IGTP, has been one of a distinguished team of three leading endocrinologists to publish a statement and general guidelines on behalf of the European Society of Endocrinology. The document includes advice for endocrinologists and also for patients with diabetes mellitus and other endocrine or metabolic diseases during the COVID-19 pandemic. The statement includes guidelines for patients on how to avoid infection and what to do when it is suspected.

A lack of iodine in the diet could threaten brain development in children

Scientists warn that a widespread lack of iodine threatens brain development in children.   Iodine insufficiency is one of easiest public health problems to solve, even though it affects so many people worldwide.  According to experts, the key to preventing iodine insufficiency is consumption of adequate amounts in a sustained and continued way.  The " Krakow Declaration on Iodine" created by the EUthyroid Project calls on those responsible for European policy to support measures to eliminate iodine insufficiency.
