‘Un bri de ciència’ dedicates an episode to stroke to commemorate World Stroke Day
The podcast from the Germans Trias i Pujol Research Institute (IGTP) launches a new episode titled "L'ictus: una cursa contrarellotge" (in English, "Stroke: a race against the clock"). Researcher and clinician Mònica Millán explains what everyone should know about this pathology, as well as the research her group is conducting to improve the lives of patients.
Stroke is a very common health issue, being the leading cause of death among women and the second among men in Spain. In Catalonia, nearly 17,000 strokes occur each year, equivalent to one stroke every half hour. In addition, individuals who survive a stroke can experience subsequent, sometimes disabling, sequelae.
The fourth episode of the podcast 'Un bri de ciència' premieres on World Stroke Day and focuses on this sudden alteration in brain blood flow. Mònica Millán, co-leader of IGTP's Neurovascular Research Group and head of the Neurology Department at the Germans Trias Hospital, reviews the key aspects of strokes, from detection to returning to daily life after a stay in hospital.
Her research group has been studying cerebral vascular pathologies for nearly 20 years and has several ongoing clinical and preclinical studies. These projects cover the phases before, during the acute episode and after hospitalisation. Just a few days ago, the results of a secondary study of the RACECAT clinical trial, co-led by IGTP and the Hospital, came out, concluding that taking patients with haemorrhagic stroke to the nearest centre could improve their prognosis.
The podcast contributes to the awareness-raising and dissemination objectives of the Germans Trias i Pujol Research Institute. This project ensures that cutting-edge research at the Can Ruti Campus reaches a wide and diverse audience.
You can listen to the episode on Spotify, iVoox, Google Podcasts and Apple Podcasts.
