The Biostatistics Unit is made up by a team of statisticians and mathematicians who conduct and support biomedical research primarily at the Can Ruti Campus, and also in collaboration with other public or private organizations. The Unit has recently been introduced to the technologies and services provided by the Germans Trias i Pujol Research Institute (IGTP).

A boost to biomedical research with statistical tools: from COVID-19 analysis to data management with REDCapDM
IGTP’s Biostatistics Unit have recently published two notable articles. The first paper, appearing in Scientific Reports, reveals the role of socioeconomic inequalities and vaccination in the spread of the pandemic. The second, published in BMC Medical Research Methodology, introduces REDCapDM, a new R package designed to enhance efficiency and reliability in the management of research data collected through the popular REDCap platform.

On 5 June, the fourth year high school students from Sadako School in Barcelona explored the facilities of IGTP in a morning filled with activity. The visit introduced them to some basic principles of scientific research.

Can Ruti Campus remains a globally significant scientific centre due to its medical and research staff
Once again, the names of around thirty renowned professionals - from the Hospital and the Germans Trias i Pujol Research Institute (IGTP), the Fight Infections Foundation, IrsiCaixa, the Josep Carreras Leukaemia Research Institute (IJC), and the Institut Català d'Oncologia (ICO) - appear on a global list of scientists who have achieved the highest impact through their publications and citations.

Impact of ceiling of care on mortality across four COVID-19 epidemic waves in Catalonia
Researchers from IGTP analysed in-hospital mortality in 5,813 COVID-19 patients across four epidemic waves in Catalonia, focusing on whether patients had a ceiling of care. Mortality decreased significantly over time for patients without a ceiling of care, but remained consistently high in those with one. These findings underscore the need to account for ceiling of care when evaluating COVID-19 outcomes and planning future healthcare responses.
