Flow cytometry is a technique that is present in most hospitals, research centres and private laboratories, from its application to clinical diagnosis to complex research projects, not only in the field of biomedicine, but also in other areas such as marine biology and the agri-food industry. In some centres, centralised services have been structured to bring together the different resources dedicated to this technology, this being a common practice in hospitals and research centres in countries with a high degree of research activity (USA, UK, France, Germany, etc.).

Since the beginning of 1999, the Germans Trias i Pujol University Hospital and the Germans Trias i Pujol Health Sciences Research Institute Foundation promoted the creation of a Cytometry Platform to meet the care, research and teaching needs of the centre. This unit developed the PhD course on flow cytometry as part of the Master's programme in Immunology at the Universitat de Barcelona and the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, as well as providing continuing education courses for people interested in learning or expanding their knowledge of flow cytometry.

The aim of the course is to introduce the fundamentals of flow cytometry, familiarise students with the use of the equipment and present the different applications of flow cytometry in the field of immunology, as well as to provide them with the necessary tools for the development of their skills and knowledge.
